Help a Hungry Monster!

Hey all, our friends over at Hekit Studios are on their way to making their short film DENNIS, but they still need some help. They have 5 days and $500 to go. Here's a little info from their kickstarter page:

"Findin' lonely kids to eat is like takin' candy from a... you get the point." - Dennis

Meet Dennis, a monster crippled by addiction to snacking on innocents.
Meet James, one of these said innocents, a truly pathetic ten-year-old leading a miserable life.
When the two meet, our story begins. A story that needs your help to be realized.

Here's some concept art from their website:

If this project looks like something you're interested in supporting, you should! They have a sweet raffle going on right now as well, anyone who donates $50 or more will be entered for signed concept art by Director Kyle Aldrich!

Don't forget to keep up with Hekit Studios at their website.

New Reel and Stuff!

While we've had this reel cut for some time now we've had to sit on it for a number of different reasons. It has been available to potential clients to see, but now is open to the public! Check it out under the "Peel" section on our website.

In other news...KG and I are directing the music video this weekend. Yay! Between that, the feature, and working on a some new ideas with some members of Dry Fly Distilling (pick up a bottle soon!)'s marketing team. We're staying pretty busy!

We're also moving forward with our QO compilation DVD, our "mixtape", entitled "QO hearts you". Like I mentioned in a previous post, we're adding some "bonus features" that we are working on now.

We'll also be showing a whole series of our shorts at the Laurelwood for their "Beer and Movie night" Quarter Orange friend Nate Baston puts these events on and the last one was AWESOME!!! That will be March 26, if you want to come out and have a rocking good time!

That's about it from QOHQ (Quarter Orange Headquarters). I hope everyone has a good (and safe...well, not tooooo safe) St. Patty's day and beginning of Spring. We're going to celebrate with some quality Dry Fly spirits, and hopefully find a pot of gold!

FORGE

A little over six months ago we finished production on a feature length sci-fi film called Forge. Its about a disconnected ex-chef who must stop his estranged, mad-scientist brother's nanotechnology experiment from destroying the world! This film was written and produced by Co O'Neill, a former professor of ours from the Art Institute, and mastermind behind 500 Cuts. Forge was directed by Jason Windsor, and Quarter Orange was heavily involved with the production. The film is now finished will be premiering at the Clinton Street Theater on Thursday the 18th at 9PM! So come join us for a little nano-tech and drinks at Dots afterwards! Here's the trailer:

Local Tunes!

Ah yes, Portland is indeed a great place for music. There's one show or another every night of the week somewhere in town, and there's a ton of local music talent as well. I thought I'd toss out a few local grooves that have been pumping through QO's speakers as of late.

First, The Thermals! A fantastic rock group, they're loud and awesome. Hutch Harris occasionally stops into the coffee shop in Southeast where I work for a sandwich and an Americano. Really nice guy and super down to earth.
Buy their Album!

Also, Hockey! A more recent group to emerge on the scene, Hockey's got a super catchy/dancy 80's vibe. They've been getting quite a bit of play on local radio as of late. Check out Too Fake. Or just Buy their Album!

On a personal note, we've got 6 days left of fundraising for our first feature film; Evidence of the Sasquatch! So check out our Kickstarter page! More to come on that soon!

Finding videos with HTML5 (a theory?)

In a previous post I talked about a little about HTML5 and FLASH.  I mentioned that we will be moving to an HTML format in the next revision of our website and I wanted to address a little theory about finding our videos on the web once we convert.

The theory?  Finding our videos will be more awesome and maybe easier!

Great theory, I know, but here is why:

The two main authors of W3Cs HTML5 draft are, Ian Hickson of Google, Inc. and David Hyatt of Apple, Inc. (YEAH! An apple employee helped! But that is not important at the moment)

The really important thing about HTML5 and video, is that a Google employee is working on the draft.  We all know Google controls web search, but how do they search? With crazy algorithms that blow my mind... really though, they read the HTML of a site.

One of the only reasons you can find our site on Google is because we have registered with them.  Otherwise they wouldn't be able to find us all that well because our site is in FLASH.

Most sites existing now use FLASH to display video.  Google can't search FLASH, but Google can search HTML.  Enter HTML5 with VIDEO...  If all the sites used the video element in HTML5 then Google can most certainly find it.

Still with me?  The really awesome part is coming up!
Google owns Youtube. Fact. If you are a frequent visitor of youtube or just like trying the new bleeding edge tech online(like me) then you have probably run across the Labs portion of youtube.  In there you can find all the neat video projects they working on.  One project that is not listed yet is how they are scanning video and and transcribing the dialogue within.  Google's transcribing tech is nothing new but still awesome and could be used to turn dialogue into searchable HTML...

SO... in the near future you may be able to search for our videos using just a line of dialogue!  Not just our videos but ALL HTML5 videos! (but please mostly watch ours.)

Transcribing isn't even the half of it! I just don't know what the other half is yet...  there are endless posibilites.  What if google puts in some facial recognition to their searches?  Then you could find every video with a certain persons face!

Hope you enjoyed.  If you have questions, concerns, or just rude comments please let me know!
